Eligibility

Eligible — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

Being eligible means you meet all the inclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria for a specific trial. Your eligibility is determined during screening. Even if you believe you are eligible based on the listing, the research team must confirm it through tests and medical review.

Why It Matters

Eligibility is not something you can fully assess on your own from a listing. Use the criteria to get a rough idea, then contact the trial site for a proper screening. Do not assume you are ineligible without asking.

Example

After reviewing your test results, the coordinator might say: "You are eligible for this study and we would like to proceed with enrollment."
