Observational Study — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

An observational study watches what happens to participants without changing their treatment. Researchers collect data about your health, habits, or outcomes but do not give you any new drugs or interventions. You continue with whatever care your doctor has already prescribed.

Why It Matters

Observational studies carry less risk because your treatment does not change. They are a good option if you want to contribute to research without trying an experimental treatment.

Example

A listing might state: "This is an observational study — no investigational drug will be administered. Participants will complete questionnaires and have blood drawn at regular visits."
