Performance Status — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

Performance status is a score that measures how well you can carry out daily activities. Doctors use it to assess whether you are fit enough to handle a clinical trial treatment. The most common scale is the ECOG score, which ranges from 0 (fully active) to 5 (deceased).

Why It Matters

Most trials require an ECOG score of 0 or 1, meaning you can carry out your normal activities with at most minor limitations. If you are spending more than half the day in bed, some trials may not be available to you.

Example

A listing might say: "ECOG performance status 0-1." This means you need to be fairly active and able to care for yourself.
