Randomization — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

Randomization is the process of randomly assigning enrolled participants to different treatment groups. A computer makes the assignment — like a digital coin flip — so that no one can influence which group you join. This is done after you are enrolled and have given consent.

Why It Matters

Randomization means you will not get to choose which treatment you receive. This can feel unsettling, but it is essential for producing trustworthy results. Ask the research team about the randomization ratio so you know your chances.

Example

A listing might say: "Participants will be randomized 1:1 to Drug X or placebo." This means you have a 50/50 chance of receiving the new drug.
